For Glenmorangie, Philip Michael Wolfson of Wolfson Design have created SoundForm FLUID; conceived as a concrete visualization capturing a moment in time and preserving an anticipation of pleasure, encompassing both cutting edge ideas of contemporary design/art and the history of the ancient 4 Arts of the Chinese Scholar.
The idea for the Glenmorangie work, SoundForm FLUID, is a development of Wolfson’s studios' research in the manner in which SOUND can be conveyed and transformed into a tangible object.
In the design you have the movement of the pouring of the liquid which creates this languid, rhythmic motion, the reaction between the crystal glass and the liquid and then, the resulting stillness as the liquid settles in the glass. This moment of tranquility, where we can pause and reflect on our accomplishments is the 'pearl of great price' that we seek, designer says.
SoundForm FLUID has been conceived as visual concrete poetry, where the representation of sound conveys an intended meaning or effect, referencing the spiritual aspect of the musical instrument. At each stage of the creation process, revisions, alterations and adjustments are carried out to allow for the realization.
In the fabrication, Wolfson had to resolve demanding technical issues to do with the complex compound curves of the design, as well as developing new techniques for the finishing, which is a powder coating of 2 different colours – a fascinating challenge that required a new approach.
The SoundForm studies are a continually developing series and FLUID is certainly the most complex, demanding and exciting piece that has been made.
